The first of three double page spread

The lexical choice chosen by NME doesn’t compliment the image shown on the doubler page spread, the only image we are given on it; therefore we have to judge a character by the one image before reading. But, as you can see the image doesn’t suit the lexis chosen because stereotypically opinion upon the main image of the guy is nerd, an intelligent man who would be interested in reading etc. however the contexts states otherwise as it talks about sex, drugs and rock, things we all don’t associate with nerds or geeks. NME is making us question what we know about today’s society and people, therefore we as readers feel as though to gain an understanding and capture back knowledge we need to read on to find out how a nerd is leading a rock star life.

The fact the image is a close up shot targeting the musician’s eyes you can understand why NME have done so because they want you to feel close to a musician’s life as he is opening up about his personal life past and present. Therefore for him to open up to fans and the audience of NME has took courage so the image tries to gain a relationship a sense of bonding between artist and readers. They do this so the audience feels personally connected to NME and gain a relationship with Graham Coxon the guitarist from one of the best British bands of past 20 years. Blur over the years have created a huge fan base is Britain in which NME distribute the magazine. Therefore their target audience will be young music fans discovering older bands as well as middle aged people who knew Blur in the 90’s. Plus over the years Blur has been well documented since their early days in NME so it’ll feel normal for readers to see Blur. Therefore no fans of NME will be lost through promoting the guitarists interview.

Within the headline of the interview they’ve taken a strapline from the actual interview underneath this has been done for the audience who are not interested in Blur. As it’ll cause them not to skip the page and stop to look at the interview as in bold contrasting, different font and size. Hopefully this will catch people’s eyes and discover this artist, in a way NME have been credited for a lot of bands success as people have discovered about them through articles in NME. With words we don’t usually use day to day shows how this interview will be different to any other and any other magazine. These abnormal non days to day words expresses how interesting his life is and how we will want to read about it.

The colour scheme matches the appearance of Graham Coxon he comes across moody, miserable and just generally down. The colour black, white and dark green just sums up his life it’s been a blur to him filled with bad experiences as well as some good ones but overall his life has been a roller-coaster. It’s important that NME have used the same colour within the second page as they’ve used on the first page because it sets a theme for double page spread and doesn’t confuse anyone reading as the article it’s the most important part of the double page spread. In the interview itself is talks about his own personal solo music project away from his band Blur but also talking about his past experiences with that famous band (blur) and what it was like in the 90’s to be in a rock band and what he experienced so the audience gets a bands member point of view on their favourite band.

fonts with commentary

This is called forte. An unconventional font choice but that is my magazine it is not the conventional choice of music magazine you see in shops just like this font that is why I don’t like it.

This is how bold and big I want the most important information like subscriptions and competitions text to be as the readers will see it first. This font is called font choice std

This is called segoe script a font that represents an idea that I will draw for my final font choice as I want it to look natural and with a sense of rock to it as it will capture my target audience.

This font is plain something different to what I want. I’m showing you this to explain the opposite font look I want to go for this one is called texton pro cond

This is called forte. An unconventional font choice but that is my magazine it is not the conventional choice of music magazine you see in shops just like this font that is why I don’t like it.

The conventions, the producer and target audience of my text:

I will stick to all the usual conventions to simply get the basic marks as they all come together to get the grade I want. There will be a mashead in the right hand top corner of the front cover and one big image of the main band I will be talking about within my double page spread. however even though i will have subheadings i will be using pull quote to be the mian headline ojn my front cover it'll be spread across the main image. With my logo text I will be different as i will be drawing them and then using it as my font choice because i could not find a text i liked that would suit my magazine and by doing this it will appeal to my target audience with the grunge rock look of a ink stained logo. The choice of lexis will have some swear words as I want to use lyrics from their songs to target a more open minded audience who have a rebel an open spirit to say. The colour like my whole magazine will be focused on black and white as it will be my theme that will be my unique selling point. It will establish me from other competiors as readers can identify my magazine.

If it was distrubuted within 'the read world' I would not expect huge success as it only focuses on small local bands im just trying to promote north east music and bands within it. Therefore it would be published around record stores where people go for just music and that is my audience, people like me, who go out to find new music discover music and buy music. I'm wasting time by putting the magazine in any other stores as it is not commerical. I think their is a gap in the market a small one that could grow but all it needs is backing from record stores and local venues. To promote venues and bands in newcastle area would be great, with online sales and new modern technology coming out and making it easier to purchase money for free, i think there is a market of people who want the spirit of music back the one where it cuts all the modern 'bull' and just want to discover bands for themsleves fall back in love with music that has been lost for decades.

I like to have an open spirit about most things thertefore should we really neglect any group within society any one in the world can enjoy music and read about it so why target anyone. But, for the purpose of this, my target audience would be 13-25 year olds as they are at that age where they have the energy to buy tickets and wait amnd then stand watching a band for hours. There also at that age where they have limited responsibility no kids no houseto pay for. And have the money and time to go and buy a magazine and read about what they enjoy. however, anyone willing to read and enjoy rock music as the magazine is based on only rock are more than welcome by me, personally.

I fully believe that most of my publicty for the magazine will be from social networking from venues accounts that i will be showing in the magazine and bands that are featuring in the magazine as they are promoting people to buy my magazine whilst im promoting them in my magazine for people to listen to. I know idependent record stores will be very helpful as they allow others to put their magazine within the store.

audience research survey

In question one i simply asked do you buy magazines and the majority said yes (5) with only two people i asked saying no this is a positive feedback for me as I will be producing a magazine knowing people buy magazines.
The second question came back and brought a varity of answers all mixed as you can see people buy magazines differently at different times therefore i will release my magazine monthly.
Question 3 was asking what type of magazine do you read, luckily for me people do read music magazines in which that is my target market.
This question shows that people do not spend much money on magazines therefore i shall keep my product low at one pound and fifty pence.

This question asked what type of music do you listen and it brought back a lot of varity of answers. for me, it brought back that a lot of people listen to rock music which my magazine is based around
Most people buy magazines within a supermarket not the best choice for me as i wanted to place my product in music storesd and as you can see not many people go there to buy a magazine
In this question i got the intended answers i wanted as people believe people buy music magazines whilst a teen which is my targeted audience.
In this question I asked would you buy a music magazine that is based on rock and the mjaority of people said yes.

location shoot planning

Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects )?
At gigs there is always hazards as with so much electrical equipment people have to be careful as a full room of people enjoying music with alcohol can get out of hand. However, like very good venue the venue where my photographs were taken, safety was a crucial concern taken seriously and i enjoyed the gig knowing i was safe as the promoters and the venue supplied staff to check the building in adavnced and everything was in working order. Cables from the bands equipment were only on stage in which the audience and me were well away from.

What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?

I personally made sure to be careful ensuring i cannot trip over any cables and cannot harm others. The venue staff ensured us all that the venue was safe by going from precedures that were enforced by the law so everything was safe i had no worries.

Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
The time, day or weather will not effect the quality of my photogrpahs because all my locations will be indoors in dark venues with stage lighting use as lights. So any time or day i'm fine with.

Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?

In some images i want to keep the natural background of the photo but others i hope to edit so i can personaly add touches that will benefit the look of the magazine this is so i can add the logo and title of my magazine upon the images to keep a theme i intended to display.

Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?

I have considered all possible problems. No naturas lighting can affect my photos as in venues there is a shortage of windows in most no windows at all. The only lighting problem i may come across is the stage lighting used at all the gigs I shot at because they can sometimes get blurred when I put flash on. However i avoided the stage ligting by capturing the band when thet lighting was focused on them alone which gave a better image overall

Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?

No, they were all local venues that were very kind and did not mind at all. but, it was important i got premission from the band and gratefully they did not mind at all.
Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio)?
No I do not.

Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?

None of these were a problem at all because i wanted to cpature the interaction of the band and the crowd which displays a real enjoyable gig.

Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’ equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at the appointed time? Plan B?

Everything went to plan, however if i couldnt capture images i was allowed to capture a friends band any time i needed to.

Finally, have you thought of every eventuality…?
yes i have and nothing went wrong as i had full premission of everyone involved in taking the photographs.

photoshoot planning

What emotional impact do you want your photography to have upon the reader and how will you achieve this?

The overall impact I want my photography to achieve upon the reader is not emotional. It's more focused on the impact it would have on your mind in which that would spring a string of emotions. I hope my photogrpahy will leave readers believing they could go out and make their own music and discover their inner-musician and hopefully start their own band of hope and dreams. Giving people goals is what i hope to gain as looking towards the future and being the person you want to be is bigger than the majority of achievements the person will have gained. Enjoying the photography however is the most important emotion i want to get across to the reader as sitting down reading a magazine should bring someone happiness in which photography helps deliver.

What personnel do you need? Who are you going to photograph?

I will photograph close friends who are musicans in rock bands. However, for my larger photos in which will be on the front cover and double page spread I will be using photographs from bands playing live that they themselves have arranged to be photographed. luckily, i have got premission from the bands I will be using to use any image from their facebook page.

How are you going to emphasise colour?

As my magazine will be running along the theme black and white to compliment the rock genre any colour in any of my images that are not black and white will instantly stand out and capture the readers eye I will achieve this by using techniques that are on the software 'Photoshop'.

Have you briefed your personnel/models?

To repeat what i have said previously I have full premission from the band members to use photos of them playing live in which i'm using for my magazine. Also, I have debreifed my friend who will also be in an image im using so he knows why im using images of him.

What lighting will you need? Any other equipment?

Gladly, i do not need any lighting only stage lighting that was provided at a gig, but i will need a working camera to capture the shots i need and also guitars as a guitar will feature within my images within my magazine.

Where will you shoot? Will you need a backdrop?
I will shoot at gigs with people within the crowd and lighting upon the stage overlooking the crowd and the band.

Mise-en-scene - Make-up? Costumes? Props?

Within the image instruments will be heavily featured and other musical equipment. however no props or make up will be needed as rock is all about being yourself expressing yourself through music.

flat plans

This is my flat plan for my contents page in which i will use for my own magazine. I created it via photoshop this helped me as it prepares me for when I use the software in the future for similar projects and more specificaly the creation of my actual magazine which I will be using photoshop for it. Now to focus on the design of my contents page most importantly i kept a masthead at the top right corner of the page as i want to estabilsh a recourring theme that people can identify with as each week and page there will be sepearte topics in and images that dont relate to eachother so for people to know it's my magazine they will be able to recgonise the magazine as our logo and name will be shown throughout magazine. Also in the contents page I have placed an editor collum just so the readers can form a relationship with the magazine it becomes personal to me the writer and the audience this is important as it offers what alot of magazines don't offer a communciation between readers. On the bottom of the page I offer competitons and offers this is important as giving readers more than what they paid for will keep them happy and gain loyalty.

Now, to the design of my front cover which for me is the most important part of my magazine because it is the first impression people will make of the magazine as it is the first thing anyone will see. I've decided for it not to have too much infromation on the front cover as i want all infromation for the readers in the magazine as they should get their moneys worth so as you can see i'm simply stating key information on front cover, information that people need to know being buying like who the magazine will be focusing on, issue date, price and also what they will be reading about. As you can see by my flat plan the image my main one will dominate the whole image as the band that the image if of will be heavily wrote about throughout the magazine so it is important for consumers to know this is why they are buying the magazine. Also, within my front cover I will be using a pull quote to persuade my target audience to want to read the article inside.

The double page spread; one page will be a photo only as the second page will be a full interview with the band thats on the opposite page. The colour scheme of the whole magazine is black and white so the first page will be a black and white image therefore the second page will be white background with black writing to compliment the magazines colour scheme. Page numbers will be on the bottom left on every page also the headline of the interview yet again will be a quote from the interview itself. Again, the masthead will be at the top of every page just to create an identiy of the magazines look.
